Inspire Youth for Development

VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Organization: Inspire Youth for Development
Duty Station: Kumi District
Position Type: Full-time / Project-based
Reports to: Program Manager
Application Deadline: 3rd July 2026
About Inspire Youth for Development
Inspire Youth for Development is a youth focused non-governmental organization registered in
Uganda. The organization was founded to respond to the real challenges facing communities,
especially young people, women and other vulnerable groups.
Our work focuses on empowering communities to address their own social, economic and
environmental challenges. Over the years, Inspire Youth for Development has implemented
programmes in livelihoods, climate justice, education, health and hygiene, adolescent sexual and
reproductive health, mental health, youth leadership and youth empowerment. We believe in
practical community-based solutions, local leadership, innovation, transparency, equality and
working closely with the people we serve.
Inspire Youth for Development is now seeking a committed and technically strong Livelihood Officer
to support the implementation of a livelihoods project in Kumi District. We are looking for a person
who is comfortable working directly with farmers in the field, training community groups, supporting
women-led livelihood initiatives, and helping vulnerable households turn project support into real
income and lasting change.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
The Livelihood Officer will be responsible for the following key areas:
1. Support climate-smart agriculture by establishing farmer field schools, training smallholder
farmers in improved and climate-resilient farming practices, and guiding women farmer
groups in high-value crop production, vegetable growing, fruit tree planting and sustainable
land use.
2. Support micro-irrigation and water use for production by working with farmers, Water
Committees and community structures to promote proper use, fair access, safe handling and
routine maintenance of the project’s irrigation system for improved agricultural production.
3. Strengthen VSLAs and financial inclusion by mobilising, forming and mentoring Village
Savings and Loan Associations, and training members in savings, lending, financial literacy,
record keeping, leadership and group management.
4. Promote enterprise development and market linkages by supporting farmers and groups to
identify viable income-generating opportunities, improve basic business skills, access better
markets, and participate in collective bulking, group transportation, market days and price
negotiation.
5. Mobilise and strengthen community structures by conducting community sensitisation,
supporting Social Mobilisation Workers, and building the capacity of farmer groups, VSLAs,
Water Committees and other community structures to manage project activities sustainably.
6. Support monitoring, reporting and learning by collecting project data, conducting regular
field follow-up, preparing activity reports, documenting success stories and lessons learnt,
and contributing to project reviews and learning activities.
7. Promote safeguarding, inclusion and accountability by ensuring that project activities are
implemented in line with organisational policies, donor requirements and safeguarding
standards, while promoting gender equality, disability inclusion and respectful engagement
with communities.
Required Qualifications
The applicant should have:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural Extension, Crop Science, Horticulture,
Agronomy or any other closely related agricultural field. A qualification in community development
may be considered where the applicant has strong practical experience in agricultural livelihoods.
Required Experience
The applicant should have:
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in agriculture, livelihoods, food security, climate-
smart agriculture, or community development programming.
• Practical experience working directly with smallholder farmers and community groups.
• Experience supporting Farmer Field Schools, women farmer groups or agricultural
demonstration sites.
• Experience in vegetable production, high-value crop production, fruit tree planting,
agroforestry or drought-resilient farming.
• Experience in VSLA formation, financial literacy and enterprise development.
• Experience working with local government structures, agricultural extension workers and
community leaders is desirable.
Required Skills and Competencies
The ideal candidate should have:
• Strong practical knowledge of agriculture and farmer support.
• Good understanding of climate-smart agriculture and Farmer Field School approaches.
• Ability to train and mentor farmers in a simple and practical way.
• Strong community mobilisation and facilitation skills.
