Intern – Statistician / Data Analyst

Background

The Centre for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH Centre) at Makerere University School of Public Health is a national and regional hub for research, innovation, capacity building, policy influence, monitoring, evaluation and learning. The Centre works to strengthen reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH) outcomes through evidence generation, health innovation, capacity building and policy engagement.
The Centre’s work includes implementation research, routine health data analysis, equity monitoring, digital health solutions, quality-of-care improvement, data use for decision-making, technical briefs, evaluation and learning, and support to national and subnational policy processes.
To strengthen its analytical and evidence-generation capacity, the Centre seeks to engage a Statistician / Data Analyst (intern or mentee) to contribute to data management, statistical analysis, visualization, reporting and evidence generation across its research and programme portfolio.
The position will also provide opportunities for professional growth through exposure to diverse RMNCAH datasets, multidisciplinary research, scientific writing, technical discussions and mentorship from experienced researchers and quantitative specialists within the Centre.

Responsibilities

• a) Support the cleaning, management and documentation of Centre datasets.
• b) Support the production of statistical tables, graphs, dashboards, technical briefs, reports and presentations.
• c) Conduct analysis of RMNCAH, equity, routine health information system, survey and evaluation indicators.
• d) Contribute to the interpretation and presentation of findings for technical and non-technical audiences.
• e) Participate in scientific writing, including preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, reports and grant applications.
• f) Support data quality checks, analysis plans, codebooks and documentation of analytical processes.
• g) Attend Centre learning meetings, data review sessions and technical discussions.
• h) Work with project teams to promote data use for programme learning, decision-making and policy engagement.

Qualifications and Desirable Qualities

• a) A Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Quantitative Economics, Population Studies, Demography, Data Science, Epidemiology, Public Health, Monitoring and Evaluation, or a related quantitative field.
• b) Prior exposure to data management, statistical analysis or public health data.
• c) Experience with RMNCAH, public health research, routine health information systems, surveys, implementation research or monitoring and evaluation will be an added advantage.
• REQUIRED SKILLS: a) Working knowledge of at least one statistical package such as Stata, R or Python.
• b) Interest in maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, health systems, quality of care, equity and evidence use.
• c) Good analytical, organizational and documentation skills.
• d) Good written and verbal communication skills.
• e) Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
