Position Title: Research Assistant
Project Title: WIN‑WIN Project: Wetlands Conservation, Climate Resilience and Community Health

Reports to: Field Supervisors

Background

Makerere University School of Public Health, in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) and Tree Adoption Uganda, is implementing the Win‑Win in the Wetlands for Climate Resilience Project. The project evaluates the climate, health, social, and economic impacts of wetland restoration across Uganda and co‑designs evidence‑based interventions for urban wetland conservation.

To support implementation of field activities, the WIN‑WIN Project seeks to recruit Twenty four (24) Research Assistants with strong experience in health‑related data collection.

Key duties and responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and field supervisors, the Research Assistants will:

  • Support development of fieldwork schedules and engage community entry points.
  • Introduce and explain study objectives to participating communities and institutions.
  • Participate in training sessions on data collection, quality assurance, and ethical conduct.
  • Pre‑test and refine study tools for both qualitative and quantitative components.
  • Conduct field data collection in selected rural and urban wetland sites across Uganda.
  • Ensure completeness, accuracy, and secure handling of all collected data.
  • Conduct interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and environmental assessments as required.
  • Upload data using mobile/electronic data collection platforms.
  • Uphold confidentiality, professionalism, and integrity throughout the study period.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Medical or Laboratory Sciences, or Environmental Health Sciences from a recognized institution.
  1. Demonstrated experience (minimum one year) in data collection for health, medical or environmental research projects.
  2. Skills in both quantitative and qualitative datacollection, including interviews, FGDs, surveys, and observational methods.
  3. Possession of a valid certificate in Good Clinical Practice.
  4. A very good command and fluency in at least one of the following languages: Rufumbira, Rukiga, Runyankore, Iteso, Lumasaba, Lunyole, Jopadhola, Lusoga, and Lugwere.

In addition, the applicant should possess the following desirable qualities

  • Good communication skills and ability to work with diverse communities.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain high ethical standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience working with diverse sectors and communities
  • Experience using mobile/electronic data collection tools (e.g., ODK, Kobo, SurveyCTO).
  • Familiarity with wetland ecosystems or environmental fieldwork.
  • Ability to travel and work in rural and urban field sites for extended periods.

Terms of Service

  • The contract will run for not more than one month

Workstation

Successful candidates will conduct fieldwork in selected districts in Eastern and Western regions of Uganda.
