On behalf of our client Namekara Mining Company Ltd, we are looking for a competent, skilled, and experienced HEALTH & SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT ASSISTANT to work in Manafwa, Eastern Uganda.

Duty Station: Butiru-Bugobero, Manafwa District, Uganda

 

About Us

Namekara Mining Company Ltd is a mining company located in Eastern Uganda, near Mbale and Tororo, approximately 254 km from Kampala and close to the Kenya border. The Namekara Vermiculite Deposit is hosted within the Bukusu Alkali Complex, one of several carbonatite complexes in the Uganda-Kenya border region and the only one currently known to host commercially viable vermiculite. Namekara is the registered holder of Mining Licence MML00397, under which it operates the Namekara Vermiculite Mine.

Job Summary

Namekara mine seeks to recruit a highly motivated and competent Health, Safety and Environment Assistant to supports the implementation and maintenance of health, safety, and environmental programs within the vermiculite mining operation. The role involves assisting in promoting a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with mining safety regulations, conducting workplace inspections, monitoring environmental practices, and supporting incident prevention initiatives. The HSE Assistant will work closely with supervisors, employees, and contractors to enforce safety procedures, reduce workplace risks, and maintain environmental standards across the mine site

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Project HSE Plan in line with company policies and regulatory requirements
  • Establish safe work procedures for installation activities, including structural erection, roofing, and dust system installation
  • Integrate HSE requirements into daily operational planning
  • Assist in the implementation of the Project HSE Plan and procedures
  • Support the HSE Officer in enforcing safety rules and site regulations
  • Help ensure compliance with company and legal HSE standards
  • Conduct routine site inspections to identify unsafe acts and conditions
  • Monitor workers to ensure proper use of PPE (helmets, gloves, respirators, harnesses)
  • Report hazards and unsafe practices to the HSE Officer
  • Assist in carrying out Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
  • Help identify risks related to: Working at heights, Lifting operations, Dust exposure, Use of tools and equipment
  • Assist in preparing and tracking permits for high-risk activities
  • Ensure workers comply with permit requirements before starting tasks

 

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate would have the following attributes and qualifications;

  1.             A Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field from a reputable institution with a first-class degree or second class upper
  2.             NEBOSH, IOSH and OSHA certifications from a recognised institution is an added advantage

iii.            Experience in mining, quarrying, construction, or other heavy industrial environments is an added advantage.

  1.             Ability to work in a multicultural environment and interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Desired skills/ competences

  • The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, mining operations, environmental management practices, and strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Basic knowledge of workplace hazards and risk assessment
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and record-keeping skills.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Computer literate with advanced skills in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • A good command of both written and spoken English.
  • Must be hardworking and willing to learn.
  • Must be sensitive to the perceptions of other cultures, and can manage behaviours to suit a multi-cultural environment.
  • Prospective candidates must be physically fit and be able to perform work of a physical nature.
