JOB SUMMARY
The Enrolled Midwife contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by providing midwifery services during pregnancy, labour and postpartum periods in line with health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards. Engages in activities that promote MCH, family planning and proper nutrition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide high quality and comprehensive Maternal, newborn and child health CH services to mothers during and after pregnancy, including managing complications and referring high risk cases
- Receive patients, register admissions, deliveries, discharges and deaths.
- Provide antenatal care and identify high risk cases for referral.
- Provide care during labour with emphasis to prevent complications to mother and baby.
- Provide care during puerperium with emphasis on prevention of infection.
- Sensitize mothers about benefits of breastfeeding and recommended diet.
- Participate in bedside nursing procedures as a member of the caring team.
- Provide primary care to women of reproductive age in accordance with the Basic Package of Health Services.
- Provide comprehensive high quality immunization services including safe vaccine management, administration of vaccines to eligible population, management and reporting of AEFIs, adequate documentation and reporting babies are immunized according in line with Ministry of Health immunization guideline schedule.
- Monitor the consumption of drugs, medical supplies, equipment and sundries required for service provision maternity activities and notify supervisor of restocking needs.
- Ensure biomedical equipment is in good working order by using in accordance with user manual and protocols, perform cleaning and minor maintenance and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning
- Ensure hygiene and sterilization criteria, including universal precautions, are met.
- Ensure that medical practices are conducted with the highest level of integrity and ethics according to professional and Medical Teams Code of Conduct.
- Ensure data collected is accurate and submit reports according to schedule
- Participate in doctor/clinical officer ward rounds.
- Support clinicians in managing sexual violence cases.
- Participate in primary health care activities including nutrition services, HCT services and PMTCT care, and support at both the health facility and within the community.
- Carry out HRM functions such as training and staff performance appraisals.
- Compile daily ward reports and hand over to in-coming shift.
Other Duties:
- Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding code of conduct and behavior expectations.
- Utilize volunteers when appropriate.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, LICENSES & CERTIFICICATIONS
Required:
- Certificate of Enrolled Midwifery from an accredited School of Nursing and Midwifery
- Registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council
- Valid practising license
EXPERIENCE
Required:
- MInimum of 1 year of midwifery experience
Preferred:
- Experience working with INGOs
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITITES
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of professional midwifery principles, procedures and techniques
- Knowledge of medical and non-medical waste disposal procedures
- Knowledge of hygiene management and IPC protocol
Skills:
- Skilled in applying professional midwifery care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of patients
- Skilled in providing guidance and counseling to patients
- Excellent interpersonal, relational and communication skills
- A good command of both written and spoken English
