Job Title: Managing Director – Wananchi Group – Uganda
Location: Kampala, Uganda
Reports To: Wananchi Group CEO
Role Overview
The Country Managing Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational performance of the company within Uganda. This role drives revenue growth, market expansion, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence while ensuring alignment with the group’s global strategy.
The Managing Director serves as the primary representative of the organization in-country, overseeing commercial, technical, financial, and administrative functions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute the country strategy aligned with regional and global objectives
- Identify growth opportunities in broadband, enterprise connectivity, fiber, wireless, and digital services
- Lead market entry, expansion, and competitive positioning initiatives
- Lead the operational turn-around plan targeted at repositioning the company financial and operational performance
- Organize the organization structure and recruit critical vacancies
2. Commercial & Revenue Growth
- Own P&L performance and deliver on revenue and EBITDA targets for B2B, B2C and DTH business lines
- Drive customer acquisition, retention, and ARPU growth
- Implement tight outsourced sales partners governance processes to ensure acquisition of quality customers at scale
- Oversee sales, marketing, and product development strategies
- Oversee the management and improvement in performance of Contact Center partners
- Put in place the expansion plans (geo-marketing) mechanisms to acquire access to buildings and multi-dwelling units (MDUs)
- Build strategic partnerships with enterprises, governments, and key stakeholders
3. Operations & Service Delivery
- Transform the operation to a reliable, high-quality network performance and with highest levels of service delivery (service installation, customer support) for B2C and B2B customers
- Oversee network rollout (fiber, wireless, last-mile connectivity) and infrastructure investments to address growth in B2C and B2B customers
- Implement tight contractor governance processes to ensure efficient and effective delivery of services
- Optimize operational efficiency, cost control, and scalability

4. Regulatory & Government Relations
Maintain strong relationships with regulators, policymakers, and industry bodies
- Ensure full compliance with local telecommunications laws and licensing requirements
- Advocate for favorable regulatory and policy environments
- Streamline the legal entities and business licenses of the operations
5. Financial Management
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
- Ensure strong financial controls, reporting accuracy, and compliance
- Drive cost optimization and capital allocation efficiency
6. Leadership & Talent Development
- Build and lead a high-performing leadership team
- Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and customer-centricity, in line with Axian culture
- Oversee talent development, succession planning, and organizational capability building
7. Risk & Governance
- Identify and mitigate operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risks
- Ensure adherence to corporate governance standards and group policies

Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field
- 12-15+ years of leadership experience, ideally within telecoms, ISP, or technology sectors
- Proven track record of P&L ownership and delivering growth in emerging markets
- Strong understanding of ISP operations (fiber, wireless, enterprise connectivity)
- Experience working in or across African markets is highly desirable
