About URRI programme

PALM Corps, in partnership with consortium members DCA, PICOT and CEFORD under the leadership of Danish Refugee Council (DRC), is implementing the DANIDA-funded Uganda Refugee Resilience Initiative (URRI) in Lot 1 covering Moyo, Obongi and Yumbe, and Lot 2 covering Koboko, Terego and Madi Okollo. The programme empowers women, men and youth while fostering environmentally sustainable practices. URRI runs from September 2024 to December 2028 and is part of the Danish Development Programme for Uganda (2024–2028).

PALM Corps is implementing URRI in Moyo and Obongi districts and invites applications from qualified and experienced individuals for the position below.

Job Summary

The Environment Assistant will support the implementation of environmental activities within the area of operation, with a focus on community mobilization, awareness creation and capacity building. The role aims to enhance community participation in ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation and sustainable environmental management.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and implementation of environmental conservation activities, including tree planting, reforestation, and landscape restoration in refugee and host communities.
  • Work closely with community structures, including Refugee Welfare Councils and Environmental Protection Committees, to promote sustainable natural resource use.
  • Conduct environmental awareness sessions and community sensitization on topics such as waste management, energy conservation, and climate change adaptation.
  • Monitor and report on environmental indicators and progress of field activities.
  • Assist in the establishment and management of woodlots, nurseries, and energy-saving technologies (e.g., fuel-efficient stoves).
  • Support environmental assessments and ensure activities comply with URRI’s environmental protection standards and government guidelines.
  • Participate in data collection, documentation, and reporting of environmental activities and success stories.
  • Liaise with district environment officers, NGOs, and UN partners to ensure coordinated environmental efforts.
  • Promote inclusion of both refugee and host communities in environmental interventions.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

  • Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of community-based environmental activities, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
  • Collect and report data on project outcomes, community participation, and feedback.
  • Prepare regular updates, success stories, and lessons learned for internal and external sharing.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or a related field.
  • At least 1–2 years of experience working in community-based environmental or livelihood programs, preferably in refugee or humanitarian settings.
  • Knowledge of Ugandan environmental laws, refugee settlement dynamics, and resilience-building approaches.
  • Commitment to environmental sustainability and community resilience.
  • Respect for diversity and sensitivity to refugees and host community contexts.
  • Strong sense of accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct.
  • Willingness to work in remote and field-based settings.
  • Good communication, facilitation, and teamwork skills.
  • Fluency in English and knowledge of local languages used in refugee settlements is an added advantage.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, email).
  • A valid riding permit is a MUST
