Introducing Nitidæ
Nitidæ is a French non-profit organisation active in eight African countries, with around 300 staff. It designs and implements projects that reconcile natural-resource protection with sustainable local economic development, combining expertise in farming systems, value chains, forests and climate.
In Uganda, Nitida combines a small coordination team in Kampala with an agronomy team based around Fort Portal.
Its activities focus on agroecological and agroforestry transitions, particularly in coffee and cocoa systems, through field implementation, technical studies and partnerships with farmers, cooperatives, public authorities, research organisations and private actors.
Background & objectives
Role
Nitida Uganda is seeking highly experienced drivers to join its pool of temporary Driver / Couriers. Successful applicants will be engaged on an on-call basis whenever operational needs arise. This is not a full-time or permanent position, and there is no guarantee of a minimum number of working days or assignments.
Drivers will be contacted for field missions and other official activities. Whenever possible, assignments will be communicated in advance, with details on their duration, location and terms. However, drivers are expected to remain flexible and, where feasible, available to respond to urgent operational needs or assignments requested at short notice.
Applicants must be fully confident and highly proficient in driving both a manual-transmission pick-up vehicle and a motorbike, including in Kampala and on rural, rough and upcountry roads. Safe operation of both vehicle types is an essential requirement for this role.
The temporary Driver / Courier will work under the hierarchical supervision of the Finance & Administration Officer and/or the Country Representative in Uganda, and in close coordination with project teams and logistics/administration staff.
Your mission will encompass different aspects
- Safely operate Nitidæ’s manual-transmission pick-up vehicle and, when required, a motorbike, in strict compliance with Ugandan traffic regulations and Nitida’s safety procedures.
- Transport staff, partners and visitors according to approved schedules and mission plans, in Kampala and upcountry as required.
- Maintain strong situational awareness during movements (road conditions, demonstrations, checkpoints and potential incidents) and follow Nitidæ’s travel-security instructions and reporting lines.
- Use GPS and geolocation applications, particularly Google Maps, confidently, including to reach unfamiliar areas or precise locations shared through coordinates or dropped pins.
- Know and be able to use primary and alternative routes between key locations, including evacuation routes, and adapt itineraries rapidly if roads are blocked or the security situation deteriorates, under the instruction of the Country Representative.
- Carry out official errands and deliveries, including documents, small equipment, procurement pick-ups, banking and administrative errands.
- Maintain the pick-up vehicle and motorbike in good working condition through routine checks, cleaning and timely servicing, and immediately report any malfunction.
- Maintain accurate vehicle and motorbike logbooks covering mileage, fuel, routes, passengers, maintenance and incidents.
- Support basic logistics, including loading and unloading, securing cargo, and safely transporting equipment, sensitive items and documents.
- Ensure proper use of fuel and vehicle-related supplies and comply with Nitidæ’s internal procedures and supporting-document requirements.
- Respect confidentiality and maintain professional conduct when transporting staff and partners or handling documents and information.
The temporary Driver/Courier may be requested to perform other tasks related to his/her competencies in support of Nitidæ’s activities in Uganda.
Conditions
- Status: Temporary / On-Call (as-needed basis)
- Duty station: Kampala, Fort Portal and various field locations across Uganda
- Desired start date: August 2026
- Payment terms: Payment will be made only for the days or assignments worked, based on an agreed daily rate negotiated according to protile and experience.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Professional experience
- Valid Ugandan driving licences covering both motor vehicles and motorcycles.
- Proven, high-level proficiency in driving both manual-transmission pick-up vehicles and motorbikes is mandatory.
- At least 3 years of proven professional driving experience, including on rural, rough and upcountry roads.
- Prior experience with an NGO or international organisation is an asset.
- Good knowledge of Kampala and major routes across Uganda, with the ability to plan safe journeys and anticipate road conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate multiple route options and operate under security constraints, preferably with experience supporting emergency or evacuation movements.
Essential skills
- Strong commitment to road safety, punctuality and service quality.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to detect early signs of issues on both pick-up vehicles and motorbikes, or to liaise effectively with mechanics.
- Excellent command of GPS and geolocation applications, especially Google Maps.
- Ability to keep clear written records, including logbooks, fuel tracking and simple forms.
- Ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written; mastery of a local language such as Luganda or Rutooro is appreciated.
- Integrity, reliability and respect for organisational procedures.
Qualities and other skills
- Strong organisational skills: rigour, responsiveness, adaptability, anticipation and planning.
- Courtesy and strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse profiles.
- Discretion and respect for confidentiality.
